The Company That Only Makes Solar Instruments

Most telescope manufacturers treat solar as a sideline. Lunt do nothing else. Every etalon, blocking filter and pressure tuner they build exists to do one job — put the hydrogen-alpha Sun in front of your eye safely and in as much detail as the aperture allows.

The range runs from the 40mm LS40THa, which will show you prominences on the limb from a suburban garden, up to the LS230THa double stack, an instrument built for observatories. In between sit the MT universal telescopes that work on the Sun by day and deep sky at night, and the filter sets that convert a refractor you already own.

Solar filtering is not a place to improvise. Everything on this page is a purpose-built Lunt product, and we will tell you honestly whether a filter set fits your telescope before you order it.

SAFETY
FIRST

We will tell you if a filter does not fit your telescope

An improvised or ill-fitting solar filter is not a cosmetic problem. Every product here filters the light at the front of the telescope or inside a sealed etalon module built for the purpose.

Send us your telescope model before you order a filter set and we will confirm the fit. If it does not fit, we will say so rather than sell it to you. Call +1 (855) 501-0541.

1

Solar is all they do

Lunt build nothing but solar instruments, and it shows in the detail the etalons resolve.

2

Pressure tuned, not tilt tuned

Barometric tuning shifts the passband evenly across the whole disk rather than across a tilted wedge.

3

Fitment confirmed before shipping

Tell us your telescope and we check the filter set against it first.

4

Free shipping on all of it

Every Lunt product on this page ships free within the United States.

Model Aperture Type Best for From
LS50THa 50mm Dedicated H-alpha A first dedicated solar scope From $995.99
LS60MT 60mm Universal day and night One telescope for Sun and sky From $1,195.99
LS80MT 80mm Universal day and night Finer filament detail, ED at night From $2,595.99
LS100MT 100mm Universal day and night Serious aperture, still portable From $4,195.99
LS152THa 152mm Dedicated H-alpha Research-grade surface detail From $7,849.99

Aperture sets resolution on the Sun exactly as it does at night. Bandpass — how narrow the etalon is — sets how much surface contrast you see.

Three ways into solar observing

Which route suits you depends on what you already own.

Lunt questions, answered

The questions we field most often on the phone.

Is it ever safe to point a telescope at the Sun without a proper filter?

No. An unfiltered telescope aimed at the Sun concentrates enough energy to cause permanent eye injury in a fraction of a second, and it will destroy an eyepiece or a camera sensor just as fast. Every product on this page filters the light before it reaches you.

What is pressure tuning and why does it matter?

Lunt shift the etalon's passband by changing the air pressure inside the housing rather than by tilting the glass. Tilting moves the tuning across the field, so one edge of the disk is tuned and the other is not. Pressure tuning keeps the whole disk evenly tuned, which is why filaments and surface texture come up cleanly.

What does the blocking filter number mean?

B600, B1200, B1800 and B3400 refer to the diameter of the blocking filter in microns. A larger blocking filter passes a larger fully illuminated field, which matters as aperture and focal length increase, and for imaging with a larger sensor. Bigger is not always necessary — it is matched to the telescope.

Can I convert a telescope I already own?

If it is a refractor, usually yes, with a full aperture etalon filter set sized to the front of the tube. Send us the make, model and the outside diameter of the dew shield and we will confirm which set fits before you order.

Single stack or double stack?

A single stack shows prominences on the limb and the larger active regions clearly. A double stack narrows the bandpass further and brings up filaments and surface texture across the disk. If your main interest is the disk rather than the limb, the double stack is the upgrade that matters.

Solar observing crosses several categories. These are the pages for each.
