A telescope spends far more of its life being moved and stored than it does looking at the sky, and almost every optical problem that walks back through our door started as a transport problem.

These are the cases the manufacturers built for their own instruments — fitted foam cut for a specific tube, or adjustable dividers you set up around your own kit. Not a generic bag that a telescope happens to fit inside.

If you tell us what you own, we will tell you which of these actually fits it, including whether the focuser has to come off first.

What people ask before choosing one.

Hard case or soft case?

A hard case with molded foam is what you want if the telescope is going in a vehicle regularly, being shipped, or flying. A soft-sided case is lighter, easier to store and perfectly adequate for carrying a tube from a house to a back garden or a car boot to a field.

Will my telescope fit?

Fitment on these is specific, not general. The ED80 hard case is cut for the ED80. The soft-sided case is cut for the ED127, ED127CF, AR127 and AR152. The backpack takes an 80mm with the focuser on or a 102mm with it removed. Tell us what you own and we will confirm.

Do you sell shrouds?

Not at the moment. A shroud is only needed on a truss-tube Dobsonian, and every Dobsonian we carry is a solid tube, which does not need one. If you own a truss Dob and want one, call us and we will source it.

Can I store the telescope in the case long term?

Yes, and it is better than leaving it out. Let the optics reach room temperature and dry before closing the lid, so you are not sealing moisture in with the glass.
