Two Eyes Beat One, at Any Aperture

Almost everything you know about observing assumes one eye at an eyepiece. Spend an evening behind a pair of 82mm binoculars and the difference is immediate: the field feels three-dimensional, faint detail resolves more readily, and you can stay at it for hours without the eye strain a monocular view produces.

These are Explore Scientific's BT series, from the 70mm SF up to the 150mm ED — instruments with the aperture of a serious telescope and none of the setup. Sweeping the Milky Way through a pair of these is an experience a telescope genuinely cannot reproduce.

ED glass where it counts

The 82mm, 120mm and 150mm ED models use extra-low dispersion glass to control the colour fringing large binoculars are prone to.

What people ask before their first pair.

Can I hold these?

No. The smallest here is 70mm and weighs enough that hand-holding gives you a shaking view within seconds. Every model on this page needs a mount, and the U-mount and tripod sets here are matched to them.

What do giant binoculars show that a telescope does not?

Wide, bright, low-power sweeping with both eyes. Open clusters, large nebulae, the Milky Way, comets and the Moon are all better in binoculars than in a long-focal-length telescope. For planets and small faint galaxies, a telescope wins.

Is ED glass worth the difference?

On the larger apertures, yes. A big fast objective without ED glass shows a violet fringe on bright targets. If most of your observing is the Moon, planets and bright stars, the ED models are noticeably cleaner.

Do they focus independently?

Yes. These use individual eyepiece focusing, so you set each side for your own eyes once and then leave it, which also accommodates a difference in prescription between your two eyes.
