Refractor vs Reflector Telescopes: Which Should You Buy?
Every telescope shopper hits this fork in the road: refractor or reflector? Both can show you stunning views of the night sky, but they get there differently, and each has real advantages. Here is the honest comparison.
How each one works
A refractor gathers light with a glass lens at the front of the tube and bends (refracts) it to a focus at the eyepiece in the back. It is the classic spyglass design.
A reflector gathers light with a curved mirror at the bottom of the tube and bounces it to the eyepiece on the side. Isaac Newton invented the design, which is why most are called Newtonian reflectors.
Where refractors shine
Refractors deliver sharp, high-contrast images, which makes them superb for the Moon, planets, and double stars. The sealed tube keeps dust off the optics and there is nothing to align, ever. They are rugged, travel well, and are the closest thing to a maintenance-free telescope. Premium triplet apochromatic (APO) refractors, like those from Explore Scientific, are also the first choice for astrophotographers because of their color-pure optics. Where reflectors shine
Mirrors are cheaper to make big than lenses. That means a reflector gives you the most aperture per dollar, and aperture is what pulls faint galaxies, nebulae, and star clusters out of the dark. If deep-sky objects are your goal, or you want maximum light-gathering on a budget, a reflector is hard to beat. A Dobsonian takes the same idea further by putting a big reflector on a simple, stable base. The tradeoffs: the open tube collects dust over time, and the mirrors occasionally need a simple alignment called collimation (a two-minute job once you have done it twice).
